New 52 | Week 28: Sunny Jim Cave

I've lived in San Diego for 11.5 years and I had never been to Sunny Jim Cave to check it out. So on Saturday when I got together with my friends Lara and Sally, we decided to go see it, since none of us had actually been there!

I forgot to take any photos of the outside of the Sunny Jim Cave Store, so I found a couple of pics from the internet. From the hills above, the store looks like this.

Right outside...

It's funny because I've run with West Coast Road Runners along the trail on the hills right outside the store, and even have run past the store many times before. I just never realized it had a secret passage way 145 steps down a cave into the ocean! The cave was dug over 100 years ago. I found a photo dated 1913, with a water wagon right outside.

After paying $4 each inside the store, we started down the 145 steps. It was not totally dark in there, thank goodness!

It was quite cool and damp though!

After descending the 145 steps, we came upon a wooden platform right above the ocean, with a view into the ocean.

Look! That's the profile of Sunny Jim!  There were a bunch of kayakers outside the cave, checking it out.

Lara and Sally on the platform.

All three of us.

A better view of Sunny Jim. It really does look like the profile of a man huh?

At times the waves came crashing into the cave and almost splashed on us! Gotta be careful in there! The climb back up the 145 steps wasn't as fun, but we all made it in one piece. :) Inside the store, I saw another photo from 1913.

I'm so glad that I got to check out a NEW historical and awesome attraction in San Diego. Now I can take visitors there to check it out. It was such a unique and cool experience. Kind of makes me wonder what other cool places are lurking in San Diego that I didn't know about!

About This Project

New52 is a project started by Peppermint and I to encourage each other and others around us to try something new every week in 2011. The "new" each week doesn't have to be something big. It could be something as simple as ordering a new dish instead of old standbys at your favorite restaurant. It's simply opening your heart up to NEW possibilities.

Don't worry if you're late getting started on joining in. It's totally OK if you miss a week here or there. We encourage everyone to keep an open mind about trying something new. This is a life project, and a photography/blog and even scrap challenge if you wish. If you participate this week, please leave a link to your blog post in the link list below. You can also post images to our New 52 Flickr Group! We would love to see what you were inspired to do.

  2. It's great when you find new places to explore that are right on your doorstep, isn't it?

  3. I always saw that shop and didn't realize there really was a cave either. How cool! And how nice of you and Todd to keep the turtles fed in our absence. They were both lickin' their chops when we returned from vacation. See you soon?

  4. A treasure tucked away in your own back yard. Cool.
