Snowcapped Mountains

Photobucket I went out to lunch at Brett's BBQ with Yuri, Sandra, Swati, John, and Jay at work today. It reminded me to take a photo of Palomar Mountain all covered in snow. I had seen it briefly when I was driving to work, but couldn't get my camera out fast enough before the view disappeared. See, we have snow here! It's just in higher elevations. And in February 2002, we actually went snowboarding one morning and surfing in the afternoon on the same day. Our adventure was featured in the Nov/Dec 2002 issue of the AAA magazine "Westways". (See #4) The photo was really us, except that it was "re-staged" in September that year, LOL. AAA sent out a photographer to meet us at the beach so they could get a shot of the "eating burritos and watching the sunset" part of our story. The funny thing was that the photographer actually brought us burritos from Taco Bell, of all places. We didn't actually eat the "prop food". Photobucket (ETA: if you're having trouble getting into the Westway magazines site, use the zip code 90210 like my friend Christine did!) Dinner tonight was something new - Spicy Sweet-and-Sour Chicken: Photobucket We ate it with udon noodles and it was delicious! The flavor was very multi-faceted, which is always a good thing for the taste bud. I chopped up all the veggies and Todd made the sauce. Oh yea, be sure to come back tomorrow for a goodie!

Warriors We're Not

Photobucket Todd and I tried out the Biggest Loser Weight Loss Yoga DVD today. It's harder than you think. A few years ago I took Ashtanga yoga classes and I was getting good and strong. But now? Not so much. Holding some of the poses really took some strength that I don't have right now. Sigh. However, I HAVE lost a pound since the beginning of the year, so I guess I'm on track. If I can lose 12 lbs by the end of the year, I'll be at my goal weight. The pizza tonight probably didn't contribute to the cause eh? Photobucket Someone (who will remain unnamed) wasn't taking the yoga too seriously. Photobucket In other news, I am the challenge host of the Digi Dares this week! Come join in the fun as we scrap about our dream/favorite vacation! See full details of the Dare here! Photobucket And here's my layout for the Dare: Photobucket Full credits here. Lots more inspiration from the other Dare girls at the site!

Is it wrong

to love an electronic gadget this much? If it's wrong, I don't wanna be right! I bit the bullet and bought the Garmin Forerunner 205 this week. Todd sorta encouraged me by saying stuff like, "I know you'd love it. You love numbers and stats". He's right, he he. I received it from Amazon yesterday, and less than 24 hours later, I was using it. I gotta say, everything is really intuitive and easy to use. I set it up so that it records laps every mile, automatically. I don't have to push a button or anything. It beeps at every mile, and I look down and see my time for that mile. So this morning I mapped out my route on Gmap-Pedometer online, for a 7 mile route, going out 3.5 miles from my house and then back. I studied the 3.5 mile turnaround point so I'd know approximately where it was. And to check it against my Garmin. Todd and I set out at the same time, but of course he was faster than me so we never ran side-by-side. What I didn't count on was how HILLY my route was. Going out was mostly downhill and I was making good time and so proud of myself. I ran by Santa Luz, a ritzy gated community of humongous houses on rolling hills. Very pretty. Photobucket Hmm... I guess I was still walking too fast when I took this pic... seems kinda blurry to me. Oh well. When I got to the turnaround point, my Garmin said 3.52 miles, so it was very close to Gmap-Pedometer! Ok, lemme just say that when you're going downhill the hills don't look so huge. When I headed back, the hills looked so steep and HUGE to me! I had to stop for walk breaks a few times because I was so tired of running the hills. I guess I need more training in that area, LOL. I was SO happy when I made it up the last hill and turned around the bend towards my house. I think I ran that last 0.7 miles pretty darn fast, downhill. Probably not a good idea for my leg muscles, but I was ecstatic! My Garmin said my fastest pace was 8:07 per mile, and I have no doubt that was during the downhill run! I uploaded the data from my watch to the computer. Lookie at all the data points I got! :: happy dance :: Photobucket I'm not so thrilled with the avg speed and the total time of 1:20:58, but those hills really slowed me down. And burning 664 calories in one run is so totally awesome. Except I was really hungry for the rest of the day. And I had to descend and ascend almost 1,000 feet, which is really a lot in my humble opinion. Here's a graph: Photobucket You can see the inverse relationship between the elevation/grade and my speed, LOL. The green line is the elevation, the blue line is my speed in MPH. I can see I'm going to have a ton of fun with this little gadget. :) After a quick shower, it was time to take Joe to the airport. We picked up burritos from El Zarape, a fantastic Mexican place in North Park, on the way down to the airport. I couldn't have scarfed down my scallop burrito fast enough! I probably looked like a savage, chowing down on my food like I hadn't eaten in days. :o I got a really cool photo of the San Diego skyline from Harbor Drive, after dropping Joe off. We hardly ever get dramatic clouds like this. Photobucket Todd installed a new garage door opener this afternoon. Photobucket Our old one broke and he got tired of parking his car outside in the rain. I know, we're so spoiled by the good weather here. :: hanging head ::

A Visit from Joe

One of Todd's best friends from junior high and high school, Joe, came to visit us today. He had been in town for a conference, so we picked him up around noonish downtown. Oh, and if you hadn't guessed, we flaked out on the 7 mile run with WCRR on Coronado Island this morning. Getting up at 6 AM and driving 40 minutes down to Coronado just so we could run in the cold and rain just didn't appeal to us. I guess we are fair-weather runners. Oh well, I never claimed to be a hardcore die-hard runner, LOL. Joe has an infectious sense of humor and loves to talk and chit chat about all kinds of stuff. Todd's sense of humor has definitely been influenced by Joe's. Joe had a hand in Todd's development into the fine person he is today. Todd met Joe in 7th grade, when Todd did not get very good grades. By the 8th grade though, Todd felt more confident in himself and to BE himself, influenced by Joe's friendship and self-assurance. Todd's grades shot up in 8th grade and he's done fine since then! :) In 9th grade, Joe decided that he was going to college at Harvard, so he worked hard, and sure enough, he got in. After graduating, Joe served a couple of years in the Peace Corp in the Seychelle Islands, off the east coast of Africa. Then he went to grad school at Univ Of North Carolina to get his MBA. A few years after that he started a software company called Bronto Software, and he's the CEO. Anyways, we picked Joe up around noon from his downtown hotel, where his conference was. We drove north on Harbor Drive and went to lunch at Point Loma Seafoods. We love this place because of its no-nonsense fresh seafood. There's no pretense of being at a fine restaurant, even though the food is superb. The prices are quite reasonable for being such fresh seafood and having so much variety. Oh and Rachael Ray ate there in one of her "$40 a day" episodes about San Diego on the Food Network. Photobucket So you walk up to the counter and order your meal: Photobucket There's a lot of fresh varieties to choose from. A lot of their business is selling the raw seafood and the customers bring them home to cook them. Photobucket Photobucket After you order and get your number, you walk outside and find a seat. It is right on the water so you have to watch out for seagulls trying to eat your food! Photobucket I got a calamari sandwich on sourdough, while the two boys got fresh halibut sandwiches. Photobucket I think everyone was pretty happy with their choices! Photobucket Photobucket You can still see the storm clouds in the background: Photobucket Joe and Todd: Photobucket After lunch we drove down to Seaport Village, where Joe found some unicorn t-shirts and trinkets for his two little girls. They love unicorns! We also had some fudge and some Ben & Jerry's ice cream down there. Ah, the good life! We came home and played a lot of Wii games together. Joe tried out the Wii Fit and was dismayed at his Wii Fit age. Well, who isn't on their first try??? We also played a rousing game of Mario Kart. We made Turkey and Potato Soup with Canadian Bacon: Photobucket After dinner we went to Yogurt World for some tart yogurt dessert. Joe's never had tart yogurt before, but he liked it!

Sunshine is taking a well-deserved break

Photo today: Photobucket It rained all day yesterday and today, and we're expecting a couple more inches of rain tonight! January & February is "rainy" season in San Diego, even though it's not even that much because we average only 10 inches of rain per year.
While listgirl takes a nap, I, her ever mischievous spouse have taken over the blog. I'm sure all of you are quivering in your slippers, wondering what mundane tales I have to tell. If that is indeed running through your mind, I will not disappoint you! No I will not. As readers of this blog are aware - yesterday was my birthday. I ate the good food, enjoyed all the accolades, stayed up till midnight...and then had to get up and get to work early. This is because my department was tasked with feeding my company this morning. Most departments buy some bagels and yogurts and call it a day. But when it is our turn? We purchase vast quantities of raw materials and started a-cooking. I can't take credit for this though I love feeding people. This was my bosses' idea. BTW, about 100 folks are employed at the San Diego headquarters. Maybe 3/4 of them will come upstairs for the free food. Here's one of the two 10lb bags of pancake mix. Photobucket And a bit of juice (it ran out). Photobucket Here is my boss, Carlo, on meat duty. We had 6 pounds of bacon and 4 pounds of sausage. It was not enough - the meat ran out. Photobucket The pancakes fared better. Amy and John did most of the pancake duty. If you wonder what I did besides standing around...let me tell you. I did a bit of pancake duty until John became very eager and pushed me aside. Amy the project manager had created a smiling schedule to help overcome the antisocial reputation that IT folks have. So I smiled on cue. And I ran around and grabbed stuff as needed. Mostly I stood around. Photobucket Photobucket We had power issues all morning as the wimpy work circuits couldn't handle more than one griddle. So the cords were snaking all over the building. Photobucket After the masses left and we were feeling a bit loopy, Amy decided to fling some food around. Well who wouldn't at that point? Photobucket And that's was that. I suspect the blog will go on lock-down tomorrow and I won't be able to get in for a while. But eventually I'll be back...you just can't keep a prankster down.

Dinner tonight was Chicken Puttanesca with Angel Hair Pasta. Super easy and fast to make, and oh so delicious! Photobucket
