Feliz Cinco de Mayo

For the longest time, I thought Cinco de Mayo was Mexican independence day, until my friend Julio corrected me a few years ago. Turns out that the holiday celebrates the Mexican army's victory over the French forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. But now it's an excuse to eat Mexican food, and to drink Coronas, Dos X, and margaritas. Who am I to NOT celebrate Cinco de Mayo, since I live so close to Mexico? :p

The Other Shoe

Sometimes I feel like I live life in fear of what bad things might happen to me or people I love. This really impedes me from enjoying the here and now. This is partially due to the bad/sad things that has happened to me the past five years. Todd's mysterious illness (Spontaneous Intracranial Hypotension) that kept him bedridden for two months in 2005. Todd's layoff from his job in 2005. My mom's cancer in 2006 and subsequent battle, and loss, in 2007. My sister's seven year old autistic son who does not speak. My sister's husband's father's sudden death in December 2008. Todd's work friend Chris dying in a car crash earlier this year. My friend Barbara dying of breast cancer last month. Todd's uncle Marshall dying after falling and hitting his head last month. See what I mean? I am always living in fear for the other shoe to drop. I recently came upon a paper scrapping challenge blog that really moved me. It is about something bad that happened to this woman (you can read about it here). And how it changed her life. In her words: "I don't need to be afraid anymore. Fear sucks the joy out of life. I spent so much time feeling afraid of bad things happening. Guess what? Bad stuff does happen. People get sick, they die, sometimes people you love hurt you, you can lose your job, your kids can get into trouble, gas prices can go through the roof, your house can be worth less than you paid for it, you may not have enough money to retire.....you can be attacked and bitten by a rabid raccoon during an idylic walk in the woods. The only thing you can do is get through it..and if you have to, strangle it dead. There is no point in being afraid of it happening. Life is big and messy and complicated but I'd rather take it all than nothing. So I decided to say NO to fear from that day on. Since then, I have experienced some of those very things I was so afraid of and I have to say I have been calmer, happier and more at peace than ever before." This is my wish for myself: to stop living in fear for the other shoe to drop. To be able to enjoy the great moments in my life without being afraid. And to live each year of my life celebrating my life, instead of worrying about getting older. I won't always succeed, but I will try. I made this layout for the Little Dreamer Designs blog challenge "Birthday Wishes Journaling Challenge", in honor of LDD's 2nd birthday. Full credits here. Tomorrow is the last day to turn in all the Little Dreamers Designs birthday challenge layouts for your % off coupon to the store! I've been listening to some new-to-me music lately and thoroughly enjoying them while scrapbooking. Mellow and awesome music. I've put some of them in a music player on the right side of my blog, in case you want to check them out. My new favorite is Joshua Radin's album "Simple Times". It's really awesome. Oh, I almost forgot my photo today! We've got COLOR on the walls now! I picked a light blue color for the bathroom ceiling. I like to think it's like looking at the blue sky! :) The kitchen:

Homecoming

I finally got a good night's sleep last night. I slept for a little over nine hours! That is really rare for me, so I felt so good this morning. Plus I knew Todd was coming home today. Photo today is courtesy of Todd: Todd has a few photos to share from when he was in Reno. This is the first time that Todd, his sister, and their parents have been all together since May 2007. Too bad it was for the sad occasion of Todd's dad's brother Marshall's memorial service. Todd's dad Tim narrated a slide show highlighting parts of Marshall's life. Todd's mom and sister at Marshall & Jan's house: They took a walk in the neighborhood. Todd actually called me then, but it was very windy there and hard to hear him. Scenery during the walk: Snowcapped Sierra Nevadas in the background: I'm glad to have Todd back. He's glad to be back home too. :) I made a page about why I love to scrapbook, in honor of National Scrapbooking Day. Full credits here.

Downtown With Sally

Todd went to Reno this morning to attend his uncle Marshall's funeral. I was feeling a little down because of my worries related to yesterday's post. So I called Sally to see what she was doing. I went to lunch with her at Soltan Banoo in University Heights. I had the Middle Eastern Chicken Wrap: And Sally had Ghalieh Mahi: Wild salmon fillet, cooked in parsley, cilantro, tamarind sauce, curry and garlic, served with dilled basmati rice, carrots and peas. We shared chocolate cake for dessert: Sally was excited to eat it. After lunch we drove downtown and just walked around and checked out stores and the scene. It was a very nice day for walking, in the high 60's, low 70's, and sunny. We had a lot of fun just chatting and walking. We stopped by Borders Books and got a refreshing peach smoothie, and looked at Photoshop Creative magazine. Then we both got tired and went home. I really enjoyed spending a Saturday with Sally, just the two of us.

I See Defective People

{a variation of "I see dead people" from the movie "The Sixth Sense"} Today I got really bummed out because a human being has let me down once again. I won't go into details because it's really not about me, but someone close to me who is being hurt. I want to stick up for this person and really tell the other person off, but it's really not my job. Not right now anyways. It's hard to just stand by and watch someone else I love suffer though. So in my mind, I started thinking of all the faults of this person who is hurting someone close to me. And I started to really build up some intense negative feelings. I have a tendency to see defective people. Instead of concentrating on other people's good traits, sometimes I get in a tunnel vision and can only think of times when the person exhibits less-than-stellar behavior. It makes me miserable, and I know it. I do keep lists of things I appreciate, or am thankful for. So it's not like I don't realize it. But my default tendency is to look for people's faults. So today I was chatting with a friend online, when she said, "You're the one who didn't want to be a hermit", referring to my blog post earlier in the year, in which I said I wanted to be more social. But then people let me down. So in reply, I said, "D*mn you for reading my blog!" and she said "D*mn you for blogging!" At which time I started laughing really hard. I wish sometimes I have a magic pill that I can take and see everyone from a rosy angle. Life would be easier for me then. Sigh. Because of the events earlier in the day, I was really looking forward to going to the gym after work and pounding the weights. I only wished that we have a punching bag there too. For about 45 minutes, there was nobody at the gym but me. I listened to NPR, did 30 minutes of cardio, and the whole weight circuit, plus abs, and some free weights for biceps and triceps. I felt so much better mentally afterwards. Weird how that works, the connection between mental and physical.
