$100 Fun Things Budget | October 2019

20191115-2019-11-15 12.49.30_blog

November has sort of gotten away from me.  In the blink of the eye it’s mid-November already.  I’ve had things going on that I will tell you about in a month or so, maybe two. Nothing to be alarmed about, but it has kept me busy.

It’s time for the belated October 2019 edition of the “$100 Fun Things Budget”!  The below are the items I purchased using my $100 Fun Things Budget.  To read the rules of what falls under this budget, please read my previous post that talked about it.

October 2019:  $96

  1. Adidas Lite Racer Cloudfoam Slip-On Walking Shoes  $22
  2. Max & Mia The Essential Travel Cardigan  $25
  3. Felina Comfyz lounge set  $13
  4. Sarasa 4+1 Multi Pen Doraemon Time Travel Silver special edition  $15
  5. Sarasa Select Ink refills  $7
  6. Zebra Mildliner Doraemon Time Travel edition  $15

I had two pairs of Skechers slip on walking shoes that I loved and wore for like 3 years.  They’ve been worn out, so I bought the Adidas from Costco.com.  They were a good deal for $22 (but are no longer available on their website).  I had read that they run HUGE.  I’m normally a size 6.5-7 in women’s shoes.  I decided to buy a size 6 and they’re still quite big!  I have to wear thick socks so my feet don’t slide around in them.  So they do run HUGE, if you are interested in them.

I ADORE the Max & Mia travel cardigan!  They feel soooo soft, exactly like the popular Barefoot Dreams circle cardigans, except waaaaaaay cheaper at $25!  I got it in store at Costco, because I wanted to wear it on my two plane trips in October.  On plane rides it feels like you’re wearing a soft blanket!  I loved it so much that I went back to Costco two weeks later to buy more as Christmas gifts, but by then they only had size L and bigger, and none of the people I was buying for were that size.  Too bad!  And it’s not on Costco online, so no dice.  I linked to Amazon above but it’s also large size and above, and costs more.  It’s still cheaper than the Barefoot Dreams version though!

I also bought the two piece Felina Comfyz lounge set at Costco in store.  They were on major sale at $13!  Both the top and the bottom are so soft and comfy.  I’ll definitely get a lot of cozy use out of it this winter!

By the way, I count clothes & shoes in my Fun Budget because lord knows I have enough of clothing that I do not NEED anymore, so I have to use my fun budget to purchase them.

The next three items are all Doraemon related.

20191115-2019-11-15 12.56.37_blog

It’s a long nostalgic story, but I started reading Doraemon comics (manga) in Chinese when I was in early grade school in Taiwan.  It was originally published in Japanese but translated into Chinese.  (He’s a robotic cat who time travels.)  I still have some of those books!  Long story short, over 40 years later Doraemon is still quite big in Japan.  I noticed that Amazon even have the mangas translated into English, so a couple of years ago I bought and downloaded some of them to read on my iPad.  I *LOVED* reading them as a kid, and I just want to keep reliving it, you know?  Lo and behold, I was on Instagram the other day and Tokyo Pen Shop announced they had Doraemon special limited edition pens in stock.  I was so excited that I went to the website right away the bought the multi-pen, different colors of refills for it, and the mildliners.  If you love Japanese pens and stationery, I highly recommend Tokyo Pen Shop.  They’re actually based in the US (Iowa), but source all their special items from Japan.

Just look at the different Doraemon facial expressions on each highlighter!  It makes me smile every time I see it!

Doraemon multi-pen with 4 gel ink colors and a mechanical pencil.

20191115-2019-11-15 12.50.01_blog

My entire pen collection is swatched in a big notebook that I call my “comPENdium” (ha ha, get it?)  If you are interested I will write a post about my comPENdium soon.  It’s indexed by type of pen and everything!  It even includes all my fountain pens and ink refills.  I keep the comPENdium updated because it’s fun to look at, but also so I don’t accidentally buy the same pen when I already have it.

That’s it for my October Fun Budget purchases!  I’m making my list for Black Friday sales as we speak.  I have gift budgets for my family and a few friends that I’m purchasing gifts for.  I also have a budget for myself.  Top of my list is a new Canon Pixma for printing photos for scrapbooking!  I’m totally excited to jump back into scrapbooking.  My 7-year old Canon Pixma MG5320 finally bit the dust a few months ago.  I can only scrapbook if I can print photos at home, so I need to buy a new printer.  Hoping for good Black Friday sales!

$100 Fun Things Budget | September 2019

20190930-2019-09-30 14.01.01_blog

I blogged “My Year of the $100/Month “Fun Things” Budget” last month and you seemed to like it, so I’m continuing the series on a regular basis.

These are the items I purchased in September using my $100 Fun Things Budget.  To read the rules of what falls under this budget, please read my previous post that talked about it.  In September I went over $100, but I’m still under $100 on average for the 13 months since I started keeping track.

September 2019:  $108

  1. Amazon Essentials Women's Studio Terry Capri $18
  2. Danskin Women’s Essentials Bermuda Short $18
  3. Lounge pants $13
  4. Pentel EnerGel RTX Gel Pen 0.7 in 4 colors $11
  5. 2020 Hobonichi A5 Cousin planner cover $26
  6. Hobonichi pencil board $6
  7. CeraVe Skin Renewing Vitamin C Face Serum $16

I wasn’t planning on going over $100, but in the last week of Sept, Target had a big skincare sale in its Cartwheel app and the CereVe Skin Renewing Vitamin C Face Serum was on my skincare wishlist spreadsheet.  The $16 pushed me over $100.

The weather is starting to get a little cooler in the mornings when I take my walks outside.  I decided I wanted to buy some joggers and shorts in sweat material, WITH POCKETS.  The pockets are important because I like to put my keys and phone in my pockets when I walk and listen to podcasts.  Almost all my joggers and exercise shorts don’t have pockets, so I decided to buy some.  And the reason these items fall in my Fun Things Budget is because all clothes fall into this category over the last year, since I have so much clothes that they aren’t really necessities but wants.  I also got the lounge pants because they were an Amazon Lightening Deal and super cute.

I made my annual order of my Hobonichi Cousin A5 Planner.  I usually buy them from the Japanese Hobonichi site and get them shipped from Japan.  But Jetpens carries it now, so I bought it from Jetpens.  I didn’t count the actual planner in my Fun Budget, because I’ve been journaling in the Hobonichi Cousin A5 Planner daily for 4-5 years now, so I consider this a necessity.  However, I also wanted a new cute cover and a pencil board, and those are not necessities but wants.  Since I bought the planner and the cover as a set, I subtracted the cost of the planner and backed into the cost of the plaid cover.  I also bought some Pentel EnerGel pens because they are one of my favorite pens and I didn’t have those colors yet.  I love them because they write super smoothly, the colors are vibrant, and they also dry very fast.

And that’s what I bought in September with my $100 Fun Things Budget!

Making Me Happy This Week – 4/1/2018

20180327-2018-03-27 18.04.29_blog

I didn’t take a lot of photos last week.  I almost think I need to make this list in real time sometimes.  By the time the week is over, and if I didn’t hardly take any photos, I’ve forgotten all the things that made me happy!

Here’s what’s making me happy:

  • Sunny and 70’s weather all week!  San Diego returns to form!20180326-2018-03-26 07.02.22_blog
  • Got trained at work on our new financial planning system.
  • Todd’s cooking:  the sweet & sour chicken with fresh pineapples and noodles, and meatball marinara from scratch!  Yum, yum, yum!20180329-2018-03-29 18.43.48_blog
  • Daily free bagels from Panera for two weeks!  I’m a rewards member and they sometimes give me offers.  I got daily free bagels for the entire month of November before!
  • Working from home on Friday.  I hardly ever get to work from home anymore due to my meeting schedule.  Sigh.
  • Noodle getting obsessed with his puffy bed that I bought him over six months ago!  Sometimes it takes cats SO LONG to decide that they actually like something!20180329-2018-03-29 17.00.30_blog
  • Opening Day of the 2018 Major League Baseball season!
  • Hour long walk at the beach, followed by our favorite pizza!  It actually was quite cloudy on Saturday, but I LOVED the long walk and getting out for fresh ocean air!20180331-2018-03-31 12.09.41_blog
  • Finally submitting our taxes and getting large refund back due to our solar panel installation in 2017!  We were waiting on Todd’s corrected W2 from his work.  We celebrated with Creamistry ice cream!20180331-2018-03-31 17.28.04_blog
  • Pitch Perfect 3 – I still love it, even though it’s so cheesy.  I love the singing and it’s still funny to me.
  • 20180401-2018-04-01 15.08.04_blog
  • Getting invited to our next door neighbors’ house for Sunday rib dinner.
  • Dyed my hair purple with just shampoo.  (See ice cream photo above.)
  • Finally getting paid the rest of my annual bonus.  When they paid me the bonus two weeks ago, it was less than I had expected.  Turned out they only paid me a prorated 7 months of bonus for 2017 instead of 10 months.  They “forgot” to calculate my bonus for Oct – Dec, when I returned to work from my leave of absence.  Super-lame, but glad I got the rest paid to me.

Making Me Happy This Week–3/25/2018 Spring Break Edition

20180320-2018-03-20 13.07.24_blog

I took three days off this past week to relax and recharge.  Todd took two days off with me and we had a mini-staycation in San Diego.  The weather cooperated and we really had a sunny & warmer nice couple of days!

Here’s what’s making me happy this week, Spring Break Edition!

  • My day off alone, where I made myself a nice breakfast, stayed in pajamas all day, and chatted on the phone with Peppermint for over two hours!  We don’t usually talk on the phone (we IM and text almost every day though), so it was a lunch phone date!  I loved it.  I had to ask her if we were doing Facetime or just phone, because I told her I just wanted to wear pajamas and not put on makeup, ha ha.
  • Our Tuesday staycation where we went to lunch at Carnitas Snack Shack to celebrate Todd’s raise at work.  Everything was so good, including the chips & guac not shown!20180320-2018-03-20 11.47.07_blog
  • We drove over the bridge to Coronado.  Even living in San Diego, it feels like a vacation when we drive over the bridge to Coronado!  I just love the palm tree lined streets.  We were going to rent and ride a tandem bike, but they were all rented out by the time we got there.  So we just walked around and enjoyed the scenery and weather.  I felt so free, like I could breathe deeply again.  We also had ice cream at our favorite ice cream shop in San Diego, Moo Time20180320-2018-03-20 12.22.20_blog20180320-2018-03-20 12.24.53_blog20180320-2018-03-20 13.02.11_blog20180320-2018-03-20 13.02.45_blog20180320-2018-03-20 13.05.02_blog20180320-2018-03-20 13.07.33_blog20180320-2018-03-20 13.30.50_blog20180320-2018-03-20 13.59.59_blog
  • Todd’s homemade Asian-inspired noodles.  So good!20180320-2018-03-20 17.53.02_blog
  • We watched the movie “Coco” on Tuesday night and it was so good!  Really loved the music.20180321-2018-03-20 22.14.28_blog
  • It was warm enough to wear shorts!
  • On Wednesday went to lunch at Macaroni Grill (Todd had a BOGO coupon), and hung out at the mall.  Then we went to a recently opened cafe called Mostra and had a latte and a brownie.
  • 20180321-2018-03-21 12.17.36_blog20180321-2018-03-21 15.01.14_blog20180321-2018-03-21 15.09.17_blog
  • We had banh mi sandwiches for dinner on Friday night.  Our favorite banh mi place also had an outdoor open mic that night.  It was kind of cold and nobody showed up early.  But we saw on their IG account that people showed up after dark to play the open mic, so we missed out by being too early.  We were hungry though!20180323-2018-03-23 18.49.47_blog
  • I got a really nice new full-length mirror from Target.  Todd hung it on the wall for me downstairs in our entryway.  Now I have great lighting for outfit photos, ha ha!  The background is our spiral staircase.  To the right (or left, since we’re looking at a mirror image) is our living room that we use for working out.  I love the new mirror and its location!20180324-2018-03-24 11.59.00_blog
  • Todd and I went downtown to Copley Symphony Hall for a jazz concert.  It’s the Lincoln Center Jazz band with Chick Corea, who is one of Todd’s long time favorite jazz piano players.  20180324-2018-03-24 19.55.35_blog20180324-2018-03-24 20.05.41_blog
  • Noodle being cute.
  • 20180323-2018-03-23 22.36.45_blog20180325-2018-03-25 11.13.34_blog

I did work Thursday and Friday, but those are the best days of the week to work!  I could get used to this taking three days off and working two days per week, ha ha.

  • Finding out that someone else at my workplace is also in the PMT Style Challenge!  We can wearing matching outfits for 5 weeks starting on April 2nd, ha ha!
  • Sugary treats at work.  We’ve had a ton of meetings so our admin has ordered a ton of food.  While I took these home and shared with Todd, it’s time to stop eating the “found food” at work, LOL.  I guess they make me both happy & sad at the same time!20180316-2018-03-16 14.46.45_blog

Making Me Happy This Week–3/11/2018

20180308-2018-03-08 21.28.53_blog

This past Sunday was my birthday!  Due to daylight saving time, I only had 23 hours of birthday, ha ha.  I made the most of it.  Another trip around the sun and I couldn’t be more grateful for my family and friends. That’s what life is all about.

Here’s what’s making me happy this week:

  • Talking to my sister Joyce on the phone on my birthday.
  • My birthday lunch at Tip Top Meats in Carlsbad.  Some may think it strange that’s where I went for birthday lunch.  But I’ve always wanted to try this deli ever since they catered Oktoberfest at my work.  20180311-2018-03-11 13.05.52_blog20180311-2018-03-11 13.30.41_blog
  • Ordering stuff from the internet, using my bonus money.
  • My new Old Navy denim jacket.  I’ve discovered that since I don’t like to button my jackets, it looks nicer and more fitted if I get one size smaller than my normal size.  So I got a small in this jacket and I like the fit much more.  Returned the medium.  20180309-2018-03-09 19.12.28_blog
  • Taking naps.  Seriously the best.
  • Dinner with Dejah & Roby at Tasty Noodle House.  Miss them so much since they moved away!  Awesome conversation and great food.20180305-2018-03-05 19.16.25_blog20180305-2018-03-05 18.28.06_blog
  • Signing up for the PMT Spring 2018 Style Challenge and buying the few pieces of clothing that I didn’t have yet.  I love spring colors and will LOVE Audrey telling me what to wear everyday for 5 weeks starting on April 2nd!  You can find out more about it here.
  • Lunch with the ladies at work at Cheesecake Factory.
  • Chris Botti concert at CA Center for Arts in Escondido.  Was a nice week night out.20180308-2018-03-08 19.42.11_blog20180308-2018-03-08 21.28.53_blog
  • Todd’s “Cake-Off” contest at work, and his chocolate prune cake entry.  He saved a piece for me.  Todd squared off against Meenal.  Todd won for taste, and Meenal won for decoration.  Todd does not decorate his cakes, but they are always super-tasty!28872650_149155772422698_2232493428883587072_o_blog28958662_10155105970442511_1595857298362007298_n_blog20180309-2018-03-09 16.51.38_blog
  • Doing a Jessica Smith workout.  I haven’t worked out regularly in two months, for various reasons.  Felt great to move my body.20180310-2018-03-10 09.58.58_blog
  • All the birthday posts on my Facebook wall and birthday texts from family & friends.
  • Bringing banh mi sandwiches to Jon & Kameran’s house for dinner on Saturday night.  We got to hang out, catch up, and Kameran made delicious cake and coffee for dessert.20180310-2018-03-10 17.56.55_blog
  • The birthday breakfast burrito that Todd made me on my birthday.20180311-2018-03-11 08.43.12_blog
  • The homemade beef stroganoff dinner that Todd made me on my birthday.20180311-2018-03-11 19.33.07_blog
  • The white chocolate raspberry bundt cake for my birthday.20180311-2018-03-11 19.53.18_blog

This week’s post was full of food, ha ha.  I indulged on my birthday week.  Better get back to eating well and eating less this week, heh.
