New 52 | Week 14: Real Ramen

A few weeks ago I had a Twitter conversation with Liz Tamanaha of Paislee Press. She asked me if I'd ever had real ramen before... the kind NOT from a package at the grocery store. I told her I've had it once, but can't remember how much I liked it. She told me I should go get some real ramen from a Japanese noodle house. Well, she didn't have to tell me twice, because I LOVE noodles. I love noodles so much that I named my cat Noodle. :p

But, I had never been to any real Japanese ramen noodle house in San Diego. So I went on a quest on Yelp to find the one with the highest number of reviewers and rating. I came up with two. Tajima, and Santouka inside the Mitsuwa Marketplace. We decided on Santouka because I wanted to also check out the Mitsuwa Japanese market, which I had never been to before. Also, my friend Richard at work, who's half-Japanese, recommended Santouka.

So on Saturday night (4/2), we met our friend Roby at Mitsuwa Marketplace. Dejah was a way at a conference, so Roby was game for some eating out. Santouka was pretty packed at 6:30PM. The seating was food-court style. Upon checking out the menu, we discovered that it was cash-only. Good thing there was an ATM right there, next to the restaurant, inside Mitsuwa Marketplace.

You have four choices of the ramen broth: salt, soy sauce, miso, or spicy miso.

Both Todd and Roby got the spicy miso:

While I got the regular miso:

I got the meal deal that came with the bowl of rice with scallions and seaweed, and a soy sauce marinated egg.

We were too busy eating to remember to take photos of each other enjoying the food. Todd was scared of the ramen, because he didn't think he would like the fatty slices of pork and eggy flavors. Turns out, we all really enjoyed it! Todd even said, "I'd eat this again."

So, our first San Diego ramen experience was a success! We will probably hit up Tajima next, and maybe Yakitori Yakyudori and Ramen next time.

About This Project

New52 is a project started by Peppermint and I to encourage each other and others around us to try something new every week in 2011. The "new" each week doesn't have to be something big. It could be something as simple as ordering a new dish instead of old standbys at your favorite restaurant. It's simply opening your heart up to NEW possibilities.

Don't worry if you're late getting started on joining in. It's totally OK if you miss a week here or there. We encourage everyone to keep an open mind about trying something new. This is a life project, and a photography/blog and even scrap challenge if you wish. If you participate this week, please leave a link to your blog post in the link list below. You can also post images to our New 52 Flickr Group! We would love to see what you were inspired to do.

Back to Running and Pizza

Many of you who have been reading my blog for some time know that I am a runner.  I'm into fitness and exercising in general, but I've been running for about 13 years.  I've run a full marathon (26.2 miles) and two half marathons (13.1 miles), and numerous 5K's.  After running the Rock N Roll San Diego Half Marathon last year, my legs needed a break.  I had been running long runs for a year and a half consecutively, and my IT band on my right leg was injured.  I took a break.  It wasn't too much better.  So toward the end of the year I started going to six weeks of physical therapy.  That ended in January.  Since then, I've had a couple of colds, and a major sinus infection that caused headaches and lasted for about three weeks.  I'm finally feeling better!

All that is to say... I'm SO happy I went out yesterday and ran three miles.  I had been walking / jogging, but I haven't pushed myself at all to run.  Yesterday I decided it was time to test out the ole' legs and start again.  We went to our favorite route on the coast of Cardiff again.

It was an overcast day and the ocean appeared green instead of the usual blue.

I've never noticed this carved statue made out of a dead tree before, and I come here a lot!

I just kept pushing on, only walking a little bit. I'm not in great cardio-vascular shape right now, so I could hear myself huffing and puffing, but I continued. When I finished my run, Todd was stretching and waiting for me, and the sun came out! :)

Where: Cardiff/Encinitas
Distance: 3.01 miles
Time: 34:50
Avg min/mile: 11:35

Not very good time, but at this point I'm happy with it. My time will improve again after running more consistently. Today my legs are slightly sore. I stretched yesterday and will continue to stretch it out today.

After running, we went to our favorite pizza place, Bongiornos, for lunch. I had a salad and one piece of pizza.

Todd had more pizza than me. :p

After I got out of the shower, I saw Noodle taking a nap on our bed. I couldn't help but go get my camera. Oh the cuteness.

All spread out and comfy.

Aww Christine, not ANOTHER photo!  I'm sleepy!

Leave me alone!

Asian Food Club: Punjabi Tandoor

I'm fairly certain I've mentioned the Asian Food Club before.  I know I haven't blogged every meeting, but I think I blogged the last one.  Anyways, some of our friends decided to get together on a monthly (loosely) basis and eat at an Asian restaurant.  So far we've gone to Dumpling Inn (Chinese), Pho Cow Cali (Vietnamese), Tofu House (Korean), and this past Wednesday 3/30, Punjabi Tandoor (Indian).

Todd and I ♥♥♥ love Punjabi Tandoor.  Todd's friend Cassi introduced us to it late last year, and we've been to it so many times already!  We had Punjabi Tandoor takeout on New Years Eve.  We had them cater Todd's "Super Todd" birthday party.  We had Punjabi Tandoor takeout on Valentine's Day.  And now the Asian Food Club has met there.

It's nice to meet friends for dinner now that Daylight Savings Time is in effect!  Still plenty of light out.  Punjabi Tandoor is sort of a hole-in-the-way (and I mean that in the best way), so there isn't very much seating at all, let alone for a large group of people.  So we sat at two tables outside.

Dejah, Roby, and Randy

Shannon, Ryan, Sally, and Maria.

I always get the same thing: Chicken Mahkani and garlic naan bread. But this time we also got an order of samosas to share. I guess they're gone already in this photo, LOL.

Dejah, Roby, and Todd, my awesome husband who organizes the Asian Food Club outings.  :p

One of the best parts of the Asian Food Club is the socializing. I think it's very fun to get together with friends, chat, and eat.

And this time, we also got a great sunset to enjoy.

Just The Way You Are Kit + Templates

Today's the day!  Both my stores at Mscraps and Digital Dandelions are now OPEN!  I'm having a grand-opening sale at both stores right now, 25% off all my products, no coupon needed.  The sale will last through April 7th.  :D

Now for my new products!  I've had Just The Way You Are in mind for quite a while.  I've been thinking about the subject of being authentic and being true to who we are.  I find it much less stressful when I'm being true to myself, rather than trying to be something I'm not.  Each of us is unique and special in our own way!  So my aim in this kit was to honor that theme and design a kit that truly represented me and my style.  Something colorful.  Something whimsical.  Something fun.  I'm pretty pleased to present my new kit, Just The Way You Are!

{ buy at Mscraps | buy at Digital Dandelions }

I also packaged the papers separately, in case you have an unquenchable love for papers (or hoard them like I do).

Last but not least, I created a coordinating template pack as well.

I've also included a coordinating paper pack in my newsletter as a thank you to my subscribers.  It'll be available for download (no purchase necessary) through Wednesday, 4/6.  Not yet a subscriber?  Subscribe now.  (Please note that I'll be sending the newsletter with the download link once a day, picking up the new subscribers.  So please don't worry if you don't get the email immediately after confirming your subscription.  :)

Now for the winner! The winner of the Just The Way You Are kit giveaway is...

Agnieszka!

Congratulations! Please email me at listgirldesigns (at) gmail (dot) com to claim your prize!

Here's some layout inspiration from the awesome Mscraps CT, using Just The Way You Are kit and templates.

And one from me too!
